We primarily cultivate Catuai varieties on our 1000-hectare farm near Angelândia, which thrive in southeastern Brazil’s cool tropical temperatures and nutrient-rich volcanic soil. These optimal conditions help highlight the natural sweetness, nuttiness, and citrus notes that define our single-origin Black Honey coffee.

Cultivating Specialty Coffee in Brazil

Sustainability permeates every facet of our coffee production at Ebru Coffee—efforts which began years ago on our farm in Minas Gerais, Brazil. Focused on quality and environmental care from conception, this farm was one of our first efforts to integrate sustainable practices into our operations.

With climate change eliciting inconsistent rainfall and consequently, a lessened water supply, we sought a change in our water management system. To ensure a steady water supply throughout the year, our innovative system includes rainwater catchment areas and storage ponds. In addition, water used in the de-pulping process of our Black Honey coffee beans is recycled through a closed-loop system in our power generation setup. Once this process is complete, our local farmers collect this nutrient-rich water, using it to naturally fertilize our coffee plants, which helps to reduce our reliance on artificial fertilizers.

Black Honey Coffee: An Ecosystem of Climate, Community, & Culture

Production on our farm is not limited to cultivating our specialty coffee beans. We use approximately 20% of our farm to plant indigenous trees, including Inga trees, which are noted for their ability to fix nitrogen, naturally improving the fertility of soil. These trees also possess extrafloral nectaries that attract natural pest predators like wasps and parasitoids, helping to control coffee pests, reduce the need for chemical pesticides, and support a diverse community of beneficial fungi that protect our coffee plants.

The cultivation of specialty coffee in Brazil continues to thrive in the face of challenges like frost, supply chain disruptions, and the impacts of climate change. Dedicated to innovation and sustainability, we continue to refine our processes at Ebru Coffee Co. to keep our production stable and our coffee quality high.

With every batch of our single-origin Black Honey coffee beans and our Stout coffee beans, we capture the quintessential flavors of Brazil, while maintaining our commitment to sustainable farming and preserving the rich natural landscape and its coffee culture.
